Castillo del Sol
American politician and retired neurosurgeon Lonnie Lee Hammargren was elected a member of the nonpartisan Board of Regents for the Nevada System of Higher Education from 1988 to 1994. Also the former 31st Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1995 to 1999, Hammargren is known for his “eclectic collection of artifacts” that include old casino signs and an Apollo space capsule. Castillo del Sol, Hammargren’s house, was built in 1969 and has since become a museum to Las Vegas’s past. The house is open for tours on Nevada Day, but it also was featured on the Travel Channel’s show “Vegas VIP Homes.” In 2008, he began building a replica Orion spacecraft to add to the collection.
